The Fuenlabrada City Council, in collaboration with ONCE and Caryosa, has developed a methodology to train blind individuals in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers with semi-automatic defibrillators (DESA), making it the first city in Spain to implement this.

The council launched this pioneering project a few months ago, working on adapting the defibrillators currently available in Fuenlabrada so that they can be used by visually impaired individuals.

In collaboration with ONCE and Caryosa, the training methodology has also been adapted, as the current one was not designed for use by this group of visually impaired individuals, as noted by the council in a statement.

Now, the Fuenlabrada City Council, ONCE, and Caryosa have taken a further step by extending their collaboration agreement to implement this methodology that will ultimately train visually impaired individuals in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers.

Mayor Javier Ayala explained during the signing of the agreement that it is necessary to extend this agreement «to effectively reach these individuals, implementing and refining the specific learning method that allows for understanding and learning the operation of these defibrillators.»

«It is essential to raise awareness, inform, and take action on such an important social issue as cardiac arrest, fulfilling the goal of delivering these training actions not only to the general public but also to groups that were not previously included in training plans,» added Ayala.

So far, training sessions have been conducted, and technical equipment and accredited trainers have been allocated to achieve the set objectives.

In addition to this pioneering project, the Fuenlabrada City Council currently organizes numerous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training sessions as well as the use of semi-automatic defibrillators among its employees, with a total of 55 publicly available units. E
